As you can see we had some great close races with almost everyone scoring a bullet at least once. We should be out on the water again next saturday for some more racing around 11am.

2009 28th Annual Century Cup Report

Elon University, Elon, NC

By: Cameron Hunt – RD

For the eighth year in a row the 17 Captains attending the Twenty-eighth Annual Century Cup Regatta held by The Piedmont Model Yacht Club at Elon, NC on June 6-7, 2009 were blessed with good weather and enough wind, though light at times, to race 22 heats. The 2 fleet promotion relegation heat system was used. Each captain sailed in 2 seeding heats and at least 9 fleet heats. Their best finish in the seeding heats was carried forward and one additional throw out for the fleet heats was allowed.

Eight captains registered bullets and eight scored second places. The top four captains at the end of Saturday’s sailing maintained their leads on Sunday with Baron Bremer advancing from being tied for third to taking first. Finishing just out of the plaques was Scott Vernon in sixth place.

We had light and variable wind from the North for most of the heats. The changing winds of Elon gave all points of sail as the boats traveled down the course.

Thanks to all the skippers, wives and girl friends for making this a fun event. Also a big thank you to Frank Angel for all his preliminary work, expertise, and acting as starter; to Linda Angel for being an excellent caterer, being in charge of lunch and putting up with “Uncle” Frank. Thanks to Paul Bowen and Alan Morris for being mark observers, George Morris and Steve Carpenter for helping with the finishes. I also want to thank Chris Kakavas for setting and removing the marks from the pond, thereby saving a trip to the hospital for Frank and me.

All in all, the fleet was very close with only 6 points separating the top 4 finishing positions as the scores below reflect.

Scott, Jim and Eric slogged their way a few races on Saturday in the rain at Martin’s Landing. In the absence of Spot , Scott was kind enough to loan a boat to Eric for sailing fun. The heavy rain at times caused quite a few problems, namely sheets sticking to the hulls and decks, so the day was called short by weather around 2pm. We should be out next weekend as well, hopefully for a tuning and racing day in preparation of the Elon regatta.

Here is the report from the 2009 Triangle Cup Dixie Region 3 race in Raleigh:

Triangle Cup 2009 May 2-3, 2009

This was my first time as RD for an RC sailboat regatta, much less an EC 12 Region 3 regatta. I was nervous! Having sailed a Vic for just over a year now.

Early on, I found there are a number of colorful characters who race this beautiful, but challenging boat in Region 3—especially in a blow, on a run.. These include, but are not limited to, the ever-tardy-but-almost-never-last Danny Thomas. He was even late for the Sunday morning 10 minutes pre-race group photo (something about no “#”#$&^$%$ ATMs in Cary), showing up five minutes before the first start. It also includes Frank Angel, a legend in the EC 12’s, who I had never been directly interacted before. His kindly but experienced manner put me at ease for what could have been a very nervous two days (Thanks Frank). Sixteen competitors from up and down the East Coast showed up to race!!!!

Saturday began with a light 2-3 MPH wind out of the south west, typical of Lake Johnson. While winds of 6-10 MPH were promised for that day, they were late in coming. We ran the seeding races to establish the A and B fleets. We then settled into a pace that allowed for a total of 10 scored races (20 total heats including the seeding heats). There were lots of wind shifts, typical for Lake Johnson, and lead changes were the norm. A brief shower threatened to make for damp skippers, but the threat passed quickly.

Very early, one of the local favorites, Bob Szczepanski, was put out by a defective rudder servo. Several servos came out of the woodwork, but none would fit the metal bracket in Bob’s boat. He reluctantly sat out the rest of the regatta, amusing himself with rescue-boat pilot duties, as several of the competitors did the “mast dance” (Thanks Bob). At the end of the day, Danny Thomas had a commanding 10 point lead.

Sunday opened with a challenging light south wind, making it difficult to set a decent windward leg on the course. As the morning progressed, the wind changed back to the southwest, and continued to build. Towards the end, it began to blow 6-10 MPH, with some very exciting gusts. We were able to run another 14 heats of A and B fleets. Most skippers were happy to hear the call for the last race.

It was a pleasure working with the regatta staff including:
John Amoroso – Co RD and windward mark official
Karen Szczepanski, Chase Thomas, Justin Flint – Scoring
Jock Gault – Photos
Doug Hale – Most every thing under the tent he arranged/brought.
Ronald McMenamin – Treasurer – arranging for lunch and handling the finances
Bob Szczepanski – Rescue Boat (Last minute volunteer)
Results:

Place	Name Points Sail #
1st	Danny Thomas 41 1405
2nd	Gerry Cobley 45 1625
3rd	Skip Allen 55 2112

So the results are in from Raleigh…. Congrats to Skip on the 3rd place this weekend… and to Scott for the 6th. Jim and I brought up the bottom few rungs but sailed some great races none the less. It is only up from here. We had a ton of fun and a few causalities to the hardware. Spotended up with a cracked deck in a few more spots than thought originally, and Jim needs a few repairs to the jib boom and electrical system. Overall, Atlanta MYC had a great showing and we are looking forward to the next race Dixie race at Elon.
